from Nick Rutkowski <mrutkow@tcccom.net>
Soul Asylum made a very unlikely venture to a free stage here
on the opening day of "Summerfest." It is tough to say how many of the 86,000
people at the festival went to see SA, but it was definitely packed (Verve Pipe and Dave
Matthews were also playing at the same time as SA but on different stages on the grounds).
One of the most unlikely bands you could think of, opened up for Soul Asylum--Reel Big
Fish (it is safe to say many RBF fans didn't stick around for SA.) Dave strolled out
around 11:30 in his usual ripped jeans and a tee shirt with a cigarette in hand. It is
tough to say all of the songs that they performed because close to half of the set was
filled with new material. They opened up with "See Ya Later," followed by
"Still be Laughing," and then "Black Gold". Among the rest of the
songs they performed were: "Losin It," "Misery," "Somebody to
Shove," "Just like Anyone," "Without a Trace," "Closer to
the Stars," "Black Star" and "Blood Into Wine." I may have missed
a few of the new ones but it seemed as though they were pretty much following the set list
throughout this tour. Finally, for an encore, Dave put down his guitar and reeled out a
comical, yet satisfying version of "Like a Rhinestone Cowboy," complete with
coreography. The show lasted about an hour. Overall, the set was an excellent preview of
the new album and was well worth checking out.
