...Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum were in Toronto this week,
promoting their new album 'Candy From A Stranger.' It was announced
Tuesday evening that the guys decided to do an acoustic concert at cozy
Horseshoe Tavern on Wednesday night, giving fans a days notice to show up
with canned food or a suggested $5 donation as entrance to the surprise show.
Dave and Dan performed a casual, intimate set, with selections from the new
album, as well as old favourites. Dave joked with the crowd,"We don't need
no stinkin' band." Persistent encore applause brought the guys back out
after a 45 minute performance for some humourous covers, including Wyclef
Jean's "Gone 'Till November," Victoria Williams' "Summer of Drugs," and
"Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell.
The event raised $1,000 cash and 2 1/2 tubs of food for the Toronto Daily
Bread Food Bank.

review from Benjamin

I was due to head back to Ottawa at 3:00 on the 6th but when I found out in
the paper that Dan and Dave were playing the Horsehoe Tavern that night, I
cashed in my train ticket and stuck around. I showed up at the bar at 1:00
in the afternoon, had nowhere else to go. Bought three cans of food for
admission and had a few beers until the show started. There were about 90
people, a dozen who were there for the band who sat right on the dance floor
right in front of the stage. When the show started we stood up and were 3
feet from Dan and Dave. They seemed to be in a pretty good mood and played
the following songs (hopefully I can remember them all)

Blackout
Black Gold
Summer of Drugs (as requested by the audience)
Gone 'Til November
Grounded
Gullibles Travels
Closer To The Stars
Eyes of A Child
Somebody To Shove
String of Pearls (which Dave dedicated to a young lady name 'Nikki' he met
the night before)

Never Really Been
New World
Blood Into Wine

Rhinestone Cowboy (an amazing cover that I hadn't heard yet that go me and
only me jumping up and down and screaming along with them. Dave put his mic
up to me during the chorus and all I could say was 'I LOVE YOU BUDDY!' which
was quite amusing :)

All of the fans went downstairs to meet them after the industry folks had
left. Dan seems pretty cool, quite a wisecracker at times...Dave was very
pleasant with me and talked to me about 'Put The Bone In.' He said to me
'So it was you that screamed out 'Put The Bone In' last night! I know that
song better then Dan.' I got my pass signed by Dan then bummed around the
streets of Toronto 'til 7:00am when my bus left.

I'd just like to say thanks to the people of Toronto for making me feel
totally welcome, people at Q107 for the passes, and everyone at the
Horseshoe Tavern for not kicking me out for not drinking enough beer :)

Big thanks to the band and their crew for taking the time to meet and greet
and appreciating my enthusiasm during the shows.
