SOUL ASYLUM made another appearance on the David Letterman show on Friday, May 9. They performed "I'll still be laughing" with Ivan Neville on keyboards in front of an audience especially flown in from Minneapolis for the show. Past Letterman perfomances featuring Soul Asylum had them playing "Without a trace", "Hopes Up" (before the album's release), "Misery" (with Dave playing trumpet at the end, a riff from McCartney's "Silly Love Songs") and "Promises Broken" and a few more . Steve Jordan, the previous drummer for David Letterman's studio band, produced "And the horse they rode in on" and is a great drummer according to Grant Young. Jordan even filled in for Sterling when "Promises Broken" was performed on the late night show, when Sterling was in France on holiday as well as being Keith Richard's drummer when Soul Asylum toured with Keef.

Kudos to Letterman for having the band on again!

From *Postcard*, +Rafs+ and ^Ron^:
Vic Chesnutt had been scheduled to do a free in-store yesterday at
"Let It Be"(records) in Minneapolis, accompanied by Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, and Kraig Johnson, as well as invited but unconfirmed Jayhawks. However, when Vic was cancelled, only Pirner showed for the in-store. He played four acoustic songs before about forty people; 3 new songs and "Never Again."
Note:
Vic Chesnutt disappeared right before Saturday's Milwaukee show, and has been reported to now be ok.

From "Postcard"
At the Red Carpet, a little local bar in St. Cloud, outside of Minneapolis, the Jayhawks, accompanied by Dan Murphy performed for 3 hours before maybe 25 people. Wow! Anyone catch that show?!

SOUL ASYLUM DENIES REJECT RUMORS
Soul Asylum bassist DaveKarl Mueller seemed honestly shocked at rumors that Columbia Records had rejected the band's latest album, even though several sources have said that tracks were handed in to the label's president and subsequently returned with a command to do them over.
Cornered behind the bar last Friday night (Feb. 14) at Minneapolis' landmark 400 Bar during a Run Westy Run show, the Soul Asylum bass player said that the album isn't even finished yet. According to Mueller, the basic tracks have been recorded, but the band has additional recording scheduled to complete the album.
While no title has been selected and no release date scheduled, Mueller said that everything was going as planned and the new album should be out sometime this summer. And by the way, yes, Mueller is a bartender at the 400 Bar, as is Marc Perlman of the Jayhawks. And no, it's not for charity. It's just a normal fact of life for a Minnesota musician.

Not real news but.......Dave and Winona
At the Los Straightjackets show at the 7th St. Entry last night there was an alleged appearance by Dave Pirner. "A couple folks swore they saw him walk through the Entry (and backstage) prior to the shows. Next door was would-be actor turned spoken-word performance sham Crispin Glover, so it seems this is something Mr. Pirner might have shown up for. (He wasn't there for the music in the Entry.)"

Not real news but part 2.......
Pirner and Murphy hit the "PARTY OF FIVE"
On FOX-TV's "Party of Five" Golden Smog's rendition of "Shooting Star" was used as background music, featuring Dave on lead vocals. Sounds like they've been watching the film that Soul Asylum did music for,"Clerks", which did the same thing a few years ago, with the same song.

Monday's issue of Music News Of the World has a nice article on the next Golden Smog album, due in January 1998. Dan Murphy is still a member and one notable cover is of Brain Wilson's "Love and Mercy", a song Golden Smog have been playing live for some time now. Soul Asylum even performed it in 1990. Bad news is we have to wait till 1998...good news is that the new Soul Asylum album IS coming out this year, having done work this past winter.

News from Becki:
KARE, channel 11 up here in MPLS did
a little "feel-good-piece" on Grant Young's new life up north
last night. (Actually it was initially broadcast last weekend on this Minnesota
Outdoors-type show I forget the name of). It basically showcased his lifestyle
change from rock-dude to nature-boy while filming him and his family on
their resort property Northern Air in Ely, MN. I've had a few friends that
have stayed there, sounds like a pretty decent place. Beautiful scenery...
Sounds like he's pretty happy, ya gotta
like that. -Becki

Dave Pirner opened for Vic Chesnutt
at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis on December 22, 1996, right after the Son
Volt show at First Avenue. Dave played with "another guy" (could
it be Dan? Kraig from Golden Smog?) and did a few songs, which were "great".
They played under the name "beans and water" and "wore those
little headlight things".
"The other notable thing about
the show was who was there. The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Soul Asylum, and several
other local famous musicians were in attendance and all entranced by him
(Vic Chesnutt). I was able to grab onto Gary Louris of the Jayhawks (my
all time favorite band), and he was really impressed and seemed to be acting
like more of a fan and less of a fairly successful musician in his own
right. "
This info was passed on to me. Sorry
for any innacuracies and thanks to the anonymous poster of this info! Any
more details are appreciated.

Dave Pirner performed Sunday, Sept 29 Dave at the Woody Guthrie showat Severance Hall in Cleveland, OH
The concert, sponsored by the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame & Museum, honored the words and music of Woody Guthrie.

"Pirner, who spent Saturday night recording with Soul Asylum in Cannon Falls, Minn., closed the first half of the three-hour concert. Onstage, he said he was prepared to sing only Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd," about the values of an outlaw. Since the concert organizer, Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, insisted that Pirner do more, the Minnesotan explained that from Woody Guthrie he learned the concept of storytelling in songs. Pirner then sang "String of Pearls," a twisted and absurd tale of Siamese twins who grew up to be president that had the sellout audience of 2,100 laughing heartily at each comic turn. With his acoustic guitar, Pirner also offered "The Same Old Way"-- country-blues that truly evoked Guthrie's music."
Pirner also appeared as part off the all-star encore singing "This Land Is Your Land" with Tim Robbins, Billy Bragg, Arlo Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen.
