- Soul Asylum 1997

- From Lee:
- The Jayhawks at
First Ave 12/27/97
- Dave Pirner showed up to sing "The Sunny
Side Of Life" (?) during the encore of the Jayhawks show. Dave was in
his black winter cap and worn jeans with smoke in hand. He looked like he
had just woke up or had been drinking all day. He had a couple of papers
with the words of the song on them.
- Dan played acoustic and electric guitar with the
band all evening. Early in the set, Gary Louris said, "That's Dave
Murphy. Soul Asylum is still happening. He's just slumming with us
tonight!" Dan did little singing and was the perfect back-up man,
staying off to the side of the stage. He shared vocals with another guest,
Kraig Johnson, on "Seven Days". Overall a good concert. I was
right in front of the stage near Dan during the entire concert. The best I
could hope for was for Dan to spit on me, but it never happened! ;-)

- Fellow Listers--
- I had the opportunity to catch the 12/27 show at
First Ave. This was my 6th show, and let me say, this was the best. The two
hour set included an encore with guest appearances by Kraig Johnson and Dave
Pirner. This larger group performed "Someone like you" by Rod
Stewart and an unknown song by the Cowboy Junkies. Of course Dave Pirner was
so trashed, Gary had to announce "Would Dave please report to the
stage, Dave P you're needed at the stage. Pirner also had to read the lyrics
off of a sheet. Oh well, it was still pretty entertaining.
- It was absolutely amazing how the musicians would
just wander around before their set completely undetected. My buddy, who has
no idea who these people are, stood next to Dan Murphy at one of the bars.

- New Album news:
- A friend of a friend etc.....had a chance to
briefly talk to Dave before his set at the 400 Bar. When asked about the new
album, Dave repeatedly said, "It will be out in February!"
- The Dave Pirner solo set at 12/21/97
Mpls MN 400 Bar
- was as follows: unreleased
songs in color
- Pretty Boy Floyd (cover
song..Woody Guthrie)
- Homesick
- So Close
- New World
- Grounded
- Never Really Been
- Closer To The Stars
- New York Blackout
- String of Pearls (with Jesse)
- Somebody To Shove (with Jesse)
- Eyes Of A Child (with Jesse)
- Stranger (with Jesse & Kraig)
- There was a long line to get into the 400 Bar at
the 9:00pm opening time. The place was crowded, but did not look sold out.
Dave's solo set was a good set, but I got the feeling Dave was uncomfortable
being alone on stage. Dave made comments before
"So Close" and "New York Blackout" that these are new
songs on the new Soul Asylum record.
- The O'Jeez played a similar set to the set they
played the last time at the 400 Bar. Several songs into the set, the crowd
started to clear out. Kraig's brother did start out the set singing a song
with the band using a leaf rake for like a "Romper Room Mirror"
for effect.

- Extra curricular
activities abound in the Soul Asylum
camp.
-
- With the recent departure of
Sterling Campbell, and the delay on the new album, you'd think these guys
were just sitting around. Well, campers, tis' not the case. Dan Murphy will
be touring the next few weeks with the Jayhawks,
a band also once on
Twin/Tone, Dave is working as a drummer in a band called "Oh
Jeez" and the impossibly handsome Karl Mueller has been
rechristened "Squirmin' Karl Herman".

OVER GVSB NIGHT AT 400 BAR
- The oh- so- popular Girls Against Boys'
"House of GVSB" night at the famed 400 Bar in Minneapolis may have
ended a few weeks ago when the band returned to New York, but Soul Asylum's
Karl Mueller and Babes in Toyland's Lori Barbero were fond enough of the
idea that they decided to take it over themselves. Starting Tuesday (Nov.
11), Barbero and Mueller will take control of the turntables every week with
special musical guests coming in to spin their favorite songs and/or
perform. A name for their new night hasn't been chosen yet. While under the
auspices of GVSB, special guests included Atari Teenage Riot, Arcwelder, and
Brick Layer Cake (allstar, Oct. 20).

From Minneapolis Star
Tribune, 11/11/97
head: Asylum seeks
drummer...
Drummer Sterling Campbell
has left Soul Asylum after nearly three years and two albums with the Twin
Cities-based quartet. "We knew this before the tours we did this
summer," said bassist Karl Mueller. "He wanted to make sure the
new album was as good as it can be. He finished up when he played the last
note a month ago." The album, due for
release early next year, is being mixed at
Criteria Studios in Miami with producer Chris Kimsey and Soul Asylum's Dave
Pirner and Dan Murphy. Campbell, 34, wanted to work on his own music and
learn to play piano and guitar, Mueller said. "I just talked to him
yesterday. He sounded great. There was never any turmoil. Sterling said,
'I'm scouting drummers for you.' Mueller said he learned a great deal from
Campbell, a New York studio drummer who had worked with David Bowie, Duran
Duran and others. Soul Asylum probably won't begin looking for a new drummer
until everything is in place for the new album, Mueller said. After mixing
the album, the band still needs to decide on a title and graphics, and make
plans for marketing and touring. Will Campbell be in the group photo on the
album? "That's a good question," Mueller said. "Maybe there
won't be any of us on there. The focus has been on getting this
recorded." Soul Asylum has been working on its third album for Sony for
the past year. Work began earlier this year at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon
Falls, Minn., with producer Matt Hyde (Jane's Addiction). The recordings
were shelved but some of those songs were re-recorded in Miami with Kimsey
(Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton). Meanwhile, lead singer Pirner has put
together a side project called Oh Jeez, featuring him on drums and vocals,
Kraig Johnson of Run Westy Run on bass and vocals and Jessy Green, formerly
of Geraldine Fibbers, on guitar, violin and vocals.

Soul Asylum reportedly are currently re-recording
the album they did in Oct/Nov '96 with producer Chris Kimsey somewhere in
Miami. Unfortunately, the great album they had recorded with producer Matt
Hyde was scrapped by the record company for not having any "hits".
The songs recorded for the album that will never come out are as follows:
Lies of Hate, No Time for
Waiting, I Will Still Be Laughing, Blood into Wine (Dan), Losin' It, See You
Later, Creatures of Habit, Black Star, Should've Stayed in Bed, Lonely for
You, Lucky One
Supposedly six songs from the list above are
being re-recorded with six or seven new ones from Dave.
Soul Asylum is in the studio now with Matt Hyde
producing. The new album is tentatively due in March.

DiFranco speaking on an
upcoming release on her Righteous
Babe Records.
"there was a gig that I
did in Cleveland OH, at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, that was a benefit for
the Woody Guthrie Archives. It was recorded...there was a bunch of really cool
people who played there that night. So we're gonna make an album of that
evening and put it out. The album will also benefit the archives and it
will be an album of all Guthrie tunes played by the different people who were
there."
as some of you may remember,
David Pirner appeared and sang
from the archives:
at Severance Hall
in Cleveland, OH
The concert, sponsored by the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame & Museum, honored
the words and music of Woody Guthrie.
"Pirner, who spent Saturday night recording with Soul Asylum in
Cannon Falls, Minn., closed the first half of the three-hour concert.
Onstage, he said he was prepared to sing only Guthrie's "Pretty Boy
Floyd," about the values of an outlaw. Since the concert organizer,
Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, insisted that Pirner do more, the
Minnesotan
explained that from Woody Guthrie he learned the concept of storytelling
in songs. Pirner then sang "String of Pearls," a twisted and
absurd tale of Siamese twins who grew up to be president that had the
sellout audience of 2,100 laughing heartily at each comic turn. With his
acoustic guitar, Pirner also offered "The Same Old Way"--
country-blues that truly evoked Guthrie's music."
Pirner also appeared as part off
the all-star encore singing "This Land Is Your Land" with Tim
Robbins, Billy Bragg, Arlo Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen.

make the record.
