Barefoot &
Pregnant
Back in 1981, REFLEX records asked bands to submit tracks for a
compilation record. This long out of print record contained the
original version of "Black and Blue".
Now recently re-released on CD, an unreleased song, "Propaganda"
is finally unleashed, along side other classics, including the
Replacements' take on the Motorhead classic, "Ace Of Spades".
Sadly, I do not have ordering info.

Dan and Dave were
on WMMR Philly 93.3 radio for 30 minutes...they played "String of
Pearls' and 'NY Blackout' and the DJ played the studio 'close'
They mentioned
not having computers! (damn...)

O'Jeez
(Dave Pirner, Kraig Johnson and
Jessy Greene) Monday, October 19th, 1998 at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis was
cancelled.
from Russ Brown
I was at the Peter Case/Alejandro Escovedo/Freedy Johnston concert about
an hour ago at the 400 Bar - (it ended at 1 AM! ) Dan Murphy and Dave
Pirner were there most of the night (as well as most of the
Jayhawks/Golden Smog crew) - They mostly hung out in the back,
attracting attention and talking to people - I guess they were at the
last Alejandro concert as well - He has a huge underground following -
and is part of the roots of the alt-country scene. So I suspect they
were there to see him. (No offense to Peter Case or Freedy!)
Alejandro tried to get them all up there. He managed to get Gary Louris
up there on stage for a bad David Bowie cover, but the rest were hanging
out at the bar and not really listening when he invited them up.

Surprise Dan and Dave appearance
Info from Alison and Bob:
Alison: "Setlist: a cover of TLC's Waterfalls, and it was hilarious!
closer to the stars, NY blackout, string of pearls, gone til november,
somebody to shove, waterfalls, and they ended the set with feel like makin
love. " Alison also has a story and photos from the gig at her site.
"A funny thing happened at last night's
Robbie Fulks
gig at the
Horseshoe
Tavern
in Toronto...
There were two opening acts listed, one billed as "Dan & Dave's
Golden
Soul". When their turn came, it was none other than Murphy and
Pirner,
equipped with acoustic guitars and sheepish grins. They played 8 or 10
songs, but I only recognized two: Somebody to Shove, and a cover of the
old
Bad Company power ballad, Feel Like Makin Love. They were definitely
trying
out new material -- On one song (introduced as "something we just
worked up
today") (actually "Waterfalls" -ed.)they were reading off a
lyric sheet propped up on a monitor.
Weird moment of the night: when some guy tried to give Pirner a lapel pin
with a Save-the Ozone message, in exchange for playing Runaway Train. (He
wore the pin, but didn't play the song.)
I sort of lost touch with Soul Asylum after Hang Time, but it was great to
see them again, informal and just playing for fun. And when you strip away
the layers of studio gloss, you're reminded of what a great rock-voice
Pirner has -- kind of ragged, but still powerful and with real good range.
It was also interesting to see them in that setting. The bar was only
about
half full, and lots of people clearly had no idea who they were watching.
The applause was polite, but nowhere near the response you'd expect for a
couple of slumming "rock legends."
Between sets, the bar was playing the new Golden Smog on the PA... Sounds
like another pop gem, and I don't think Jayhawks fans will be
disappointed.
The guy who books the Horseshoe said he's working on a date for the band,
so
it looks like GS will be doing a tour of some kind or another.
All in all, a memorable evening, and did I mention: NO cover at the door!
Bob."
