Second Tour Show Review: from Bill

Soul Asylum @ SXSW
South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin.  Stubbs on Thursday, March 19, at 1:00 a.m

As previously reported, SA played a showcase last night at South by Southwest here in lovely Austin, Texas, and it was as good as I'd hoped for. This was something around my tenth time seeing them over the past nine years, and, though I certainly still miss the slightly more freewheeling shows of the Horse era, it was a great performance.
Though I can't be entirely positive, the playlist from the LA show is very close to what they played last night, which would make sense given the newness of the current lineup. It really seems like the songwriting has gotten back up from what was, in my view, a bit of a slump for Dim Light.
Virtually every song sounded like something that could be on the radio and successful without disappointing long-time fans.

The new drummer fits very well, though, as the LA reviewer noted, there were occasional glitches. He certainly looks like he's having fun most of the time, and the interaction among the bandmembers suggests that they're getting along well.

The only real disappointment was at the end. For a few minutes it looked like they were going to do an encore (which would have been allowed because SA was the last of a series of bands) based on the roadies tuning guitars, etc. But then after about, oh, four or five minutes, they turned up all
the lights and we all left. Oh well.

Pretty good crowd for being a pretty chilly outside performance. (By the end of the show it was about 45F.) It wasn't up to the volume of folks at the Jayhawks showcase at the same venue last year, but it was still a large and enthusiastic crowd.
